World Sight Day 2023, Calling for 'Focusing on the Workplace, Caring for Eye Health

World Vision Day, initiated jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), also known as World Sight Day, will be celebrated on October 12 this year. The theme is "Love Your Eyes at Work," emphasizing the urgency of prioritizing eye health in the workplace.

This theme is a global initiative aimed at raising people's crucial attention to eye care in the work environment, promoting a healthy work-life balance, and collectively creating a brighter future.

According to the Workplace Eye Using Report 2022 released by 36Kr.com, nearly 90% of workplace professionals have experienced eye problems. Among them, the highest eye strain is experienced by professionals in the media/advertising industry, with approximately 39.73% of them using their eyes for over 9 hours per day. Following closely are professionals in the financial industry, and then the internet industry. The manufacturing and education industries are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. Survey findings show that eye problems exhibit universal characteristics, with only 10.97% of working professionals never experiencing any eye issues. Among them, 82% of workplace professionals have experienced eye dryness issues; approximately 70% feel eye soreness and pain; nearly half of the professionals will experience blurred vision due to excessive eye use. The percentage of people experiencing conjunctival congestion, increased red blood vessels in the eyes, and photophobia is 38.13% and 23.73%, respectively.

Ophthalmologists have stated that prolonged close-range viewing of electronic screens can lead to the eyes being in a state of accommodative spasm, with obstacles in the adjustment of the crystalline lens, thereby affecting the normal function of the refractive system. In addition to the stimulation of blue light on the eyes, it is easy to cause symptoms such as visual fatigue and worsening of myopia. Over the long term, it may even lead to visual function disorders, affecting people's work and life. It is recommended for office workers to maintain the correct sitting posture while working, and to try to keep the distance between the eyes and the computer screen at around 40cm. Alternatively, under medical guidance, some eye-moisturizing medications can be chosen.
