Analysis of the Current Status of Eye Health Behaviors and Influencing Factors in School-aged Myopic Patients

The overall level of eye health behaviors is not high among school-aged myopic patients, and it should be given sufficient attention. The results of the relevant factors influencing eye health behavior indicate that in the future, attention should be paid to the influence of family behavior on children's eye-using behavior. It is recommended that schools, medical institutions, social groups, and media increase the popularization and education of eye-using behavior for students and parents, enhance parents' awareness of their children's vision, cultivate good eye-using habits within the family and scientifically manage the visual health of school-aged children.

Objective: To investigate and analyze the current status of eye health behaviors and influencing factors among school-aged children with myopia.

Method: The cross-sectional study method was used to select 451 school-aged myopic patients who visited the myopia clinic of ShenYang He Eye Specialist Hospital in July - August 2022 as the study subjects. A questionnaire survey was conducted to compare such data as different levels of academic achievement, gender, degree of myopia, increase of myopia degree of one eye within one year, number of children at home, presence of other eye diseases, place of residence, primary caregiver, primary caregiver's health condition, primary caregiver's education level, frequency of vision check-ups per year, longest daily television viewing time for family members, lighting conditions in study areas, daily sleep duration, and average lights-off time at home. Single-factor and multi-factor analyses were conducted to identify the influencing factors of eye health behaviors.

Result: The total score of eye health behaviors is (20.09±4.99) points, with 64.30% of individuals having a low level of eye health behaviors, 31.26% having a moderate level of eye health behaviors, and 4.43% having a high level of eye health behaviors. Differences in academic levels, degrees of myopia, increase of myopia degree of one eye within one year, frequency of vision check-ups per year, maximum daily television viewing time for family members, duration of daily sleep, and average lights-off time in the family were compared in terms of eye health behavior scores among school-age children with myopia. The differences are statistically significant (P<0.05). Multiple linear regression results show that academic level and the single-eye myopia degree increase within one year are both influencing factors of eye health behaviors in school-aged children with myopia (P<0.05).

Conclusion: The eye health behaviors of school-age myopia patients are not optimistic, and there are multiple independent influencing factors. Therefore, it is possible to scientifically formulate vision protection and health management plans for school-age myopia patients based on these influencing factors.
